WebTrust for Certification Authorities (CAs)


WebTrust is an assurance service jointly developed by the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Canadian Institute of Chartered Accountants (CICA). WebTrust relies on a series of principles and criteria designed to promote confidence and trust between consumers and companies conducting business on the Internet.

A separate WebTrust program still exists for Certificate Authorities (CA), organizations that issue digital certificates to organizations or individuals after verifying their identify. CAs are taking an increasingly important role in the security of e-commerce. WebTrust for CAs is a program that helps to ensure that a CA is properly following its Certification Practice statement, properly verifying organizations, and properly protecting its certificate keys. After completing the audit, a certificate authority is allowed to use the WebTrust seal to demonstrate that they have passed all items required by the WebTrust audit.
